Wasted Apple Co Ltd

Sector:

Wasted Apple make Cornish craft cider using apples that would otherwise go to waste. They needed more apples so the Tevi experts produced a digital map of more than 750 Cornish orchards to help locate supplies and grow their business.

The client:

Wasted Apple don’t like to see apples go to waste. Their unique business model takes waste apples from orchard owners, who are unable to pick or use all the apples themselves, and makes them into delicious Cornish craft cider. In exchange the orchard owners are given some of the cider. As this successful business has grown, they have faced a major challenge – finding more waste apples in Cornwall.

What they really needed was a comprehensive list of Cornish orchards so they could approach the owners directly. Unfortunately this information proved hard to find, and alongside day-to-day running of the business they lacked the time to investigate further.

What we achieved:

Our data and mapping experts offered their time to investigate. We identified data on traditional orchards in the UK from Natural England and Ordinance Survey, filtered this data to Cornish orchards only, and cross-referenced their locations to the nearest postcode.

We then produced a spreadsheet and interactive map detailing over 750 potential orchard sites for our client. Using this Wasted Apple plan to approach orchards, starting with the largest and closest to their premises, to increase their apple supply.

As Tevi continues to work with Wasted Apple on other aspects of their business, we look forward to seeing how this progresses and grows their business.

  • “Tevi has provided tangible benefits to my business. The engagement was very positive from the start, provoking me to think about ways to grow. Tevi also carried out incredibly useful research into orchards in Cornwall, helping me identify new suppliers.  Speaking at an event for five minutes led to growing interest in my products, and I’m looking forward to working with the Business School on a growth strategy.”
