We were delighted to have a break in the clouds today and the appearance of blue skies and dry weather for our tree planting activity held at Enys Gardens as part of the Tree Council’s National Tree Week. The event brought together a select group of businesses that we work with to catch up, get our hands dirty and share the experience of planting trees together.

We were provided an introduction and history of Enys Estate from co-owner Wendy Fowler who spoke about the development and maintenance of the ornamental garden. This followed by an introduction and overview of Cornwall Council’s Forest for Cornwall project, presented by Philippa Hoskin (Partnerships and Rural Policy Lead) from the Council’s Environmental Growth Team. Danielle Dixon (Enys Head Gardener) then introduced us to the species of tree that we would be planting and the reasons these were selected, as well as highlighting the challenges that gardens face in managing plant & tree diseases including Ash dieback, Phytophthora ramorum and Xylella.

The team, consisting of 35 representatives from the University of Exeter, Tom Raffield, Green & Blue, Incredible Bulk, Plant One, Skinners Brewery and Falmouth University planted twenty trees around the estate before lunch and networking. The species of trees planted included:

  • Betula utilis var Jacquemontii
  • Sorbus ‘Copper Kettle
  • Sorbus pseudovilmorinii
  • Liquidambar styraciflua

The trees were sourced from nurseries in the UK and selected to complement the existing species in the garden Wendy Fowler said:

“Its crucial for us all to not only protect our environment but to support environmental growth and resilience in response to the changing environmental conditions.”
